Dear Colleagues in Environmental Studies ,
Do you have a taste for travel and adventure? Do you enjoy being challenged both physically and intellectually? If so, we are inviting you to become a member of our GRAB Peruvian Mountaineering expedition, scheduled for May 18-June 2, 2014. In the true spirit of experiential education we have designed a trip to the Cordillera Blanca that incorporates a unique blend of service, cultural immersion and alpine mountaineering. Over the course of two weeks, the expedition will explore the high Andean city of Huaraz, participate in a homestay and service project with the traditional villagers of Jerush, and summit the glaciers atop Maparaju peak, with the assistance of burros and native Peruvian mountain guides. Together we will explore a culture and landscape that is rapidly disappearing under pressures from industrial development and climate change.
If this sounds like an experience you could benefit from and contribute to please attend the information session this Thursday, February 27, at 5:00PM at the GRAB office in Plank 117. The expedition is open to all members of the Gettysburg College community, including family. NO MOUNTAINEERING EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED! This expedition has been designed to be accessible as possible. The experience is so valuable that the College is generously subsidizing the cost of each participant. We will be able to work with individuals if further financial assistance is needed. If you cannot make the information session or would simply like to discuss the trip in more detail please contact Rachel or myself and we will be happy to meet with you and answer your questions. Attached is the expedition description, which is also found on the GRAB page of the college website. The deadline for sign-ups is March 17th and space is limited, so if you are interested in joining the expedition please don’t wait to get in touch! Sincerely,
Danny Williams ‘14
Rachel Dinsmore ‘15
